Altar Cross Variant B smooth, with raised aureole, with gesso
These icon crosses are crafted from seasoned linden wood that has undergone additional kiln drying. The planks are selected by width to ensure the use of solid, single-piece boards whenever possible. For wider sizes, the planks are joined using a finger-joint technique under hydraulic pressure—ensuring long-term durability—while the boards are arranged with their grain direction aligned (in accordance with traditional canons). The cross is planed, thicknessed, sanded on both sides, and beveled at the edges; the back and sides are treated with an anti-woodworm and anti-mold preservative and finished with a walnut-colored water-based varnish. A canvas is adhered to the board using rabbit-skin glue, followed by the application of multiple layers (approximately 10) of a gesso and rabbit-skin glue mixture (80% Bologna gesso, 20% Meudon gesso); the surface is then sanded and made ready for painting.
Board thickness: approximately 3 cm.
The wedges are made of beech wood and feature a dovetail shape.
