BLACK COAL Italian pigment
This distinctive black is produced by artisanally carbonizing wood from the Apennine forests around Lamoli (PU).
Charcoal burning is an ancient profession practiced in the woods, amidst the fire and its smoke, still present in the areas of Borgo Pace and Mercatello sul Metauro in the province of Pesaro/Urbino.
The pigment obtained from this wood and this unique production method has a warm hue with an organic undertone, rich in shades of yellow, orange, and brown. It is a smoky, hazy, and very intense black, seeming to capture all the heat of the charcoal burner's work: from cutting and harvesting the wood to the fire in the charcoal kiln. On paper, it conveys an ancient, unparalleled atmosphere, reminiscent of the prints of the great masters of engraving.
