Poisonous pigment.
Gum gutti is the resin of various Garcinia species from Siam and Cambodia. It is obtained in a similar way to rubber, by first scratching the bark of the tree so that the milky sap can run out. The milky sap is dried in bamboo tubes and is available in pieces or as a bright yellow powder. Gum gutti is soluble in water and alcohol.
The glazed golden-yellow hue was especially popular as a watercolor in the 19th century. Mixtures with indigo or Prussian blue were offered as Hooker s green. The yellow color resin was also used to tint alcohol-based coatings. Due to its toxicity, Gum Gutti is now only available to professional users.
