An important green pigment of antiquity is the so-called Egyptian green, produced by burning a mixture of lime, quartz sand and copper ore. As the name suggests, this was common in ancient Egypt (traceable as early as the 4th Dynasty), but has also been found in other ancient cultures in Iraq and Crete. Egyptian green remained a commonly used green pigment until the early Christian centuries.
