During the production of wine, under certain circumstances vinegar is produced from the pomace. This vinegar reacts with copper-containing materials. If this acetic acid copper solution is neutralized with swamp lime, blue crystals of particularly bright luminosity are obtained. The pigment obtained is a luminous blue.
The pigment cannot be worked with acidic media or linseed oil, but can be worked with lime, egg white and tempera. The name was chosen in memory of H. Ploss and the blue recipe in his book "Ein Buch von alten Farben" (circa 1500).
